China Continues to Lead Nuclear Power Development with Robust Construction and Capacity
Time: 2024-06-07

The latest edition of the China Nuclear Energy Development Report 2024 shows that China's nuclear power sector has maintained a strong record of long-term safety and stability, with construction projects progressing at a steady pace. In 2023 alone, the approval of five new nuclear power projects and the start of construction of five additional units were notable achievements. China currently has 26 nuclear power units under construction, with a total installed capacity of 30.3 GWe. This places China at the forefront of the world in terms of both the number of units under construction and total installed capacity.

In addition, China's ability to innovate in nuclear power has grown remarkably. The deployment of the Hualong One units marks a significant shift from second-generation to domestically developed third-generation nuclear power technology. This transition underscores a comprehensive upgrade of the country's nuclear power capabilities. There have also been notable advances in key technologies such as high-temperature gas-cooled reactors, small modular reactors and fusion reactors, which will redefine the future of nuclear power.
