China Achieves Kilogram-Scale Uranium Extraction from Seawater
Time: 2026-03-18

On 2 February, the Symposium on Seawater Uranium Extraction and the Council Meeting of the Seawater Uranium Extraction Technology Innovation Alliance were held in Shanghai. At the symposium, it was announced that China had successfully achieved its goal of extracting kilogram-scale uranium from seawater under real marine environmental conditions. This lays a solid foundation for the technology’s transition from laboratory research to engineering application.

Themed “Unlocking Ocean Resources: New Opportunities for Uranium”, the symposium aimed to seize strategic opportunities at the outset of the 15th Five-Year Plan, comprehensively review the alliance’s annual achievements, and systematically chart its future development. More than 130 leaders and experts from local governments, domestic universities, research institutes, and CNNC gathered to exchange insights on the latest advances in this technology.
