Singapore’s Permanent Secretary for Trade and Industry visits China Nuclear Energy Association
On 4 February, Cao Shudong, Executive Vice Chairman of the China Nuclear Energy Association (CNEA), met with a 13-member delegation from Singapore led by Augustin Lee, Permanent Secretary from the Ministry of Trade and Industry. The two sides discussed the development and deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs).
Mr. Cao briefed the delegation on the overall development of China’s nuclear power industry, as well as on advances in advanced reactor research and deployment and innovations in the fuel cycle sector. He emphasized that domestically developed Generation III nuclear units have become the mainstay of China’s nuclear power development, and offered recommendations for Singapore’s nuclear energy development strategy.
Lee noted that Singapore’s electricity generation currently relies primarily on natural gas. In an effort to reduce carbon emissions as part of global efforts, Singapore is actively considering the development and utilization of nuclear energy and hopes to learn from relevant experience through such exchanges.
Also attending the meeting were Guo Limin, Secretary-General of CNEA, and representatives from the association’s International Cooperation and Strategic Research departments. Officials from Singapore’s Energy Market Authority, Singapore Nuclear Research and Safety Institute and other institutions, were also present.
