Chinese researchers had achieved the simultaneous extraction of three key medical alpha-emitting isotopes at the millicurie level in a single batch, overcoming mass production challenges and breaking the country’s long-standing reliance on imported cutting-edge radiopharmaceuticals for cancer treatment, Xinhua reported on 28March.

The research team from the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences made the breakthrough by leveraging national major science and technology infrastructure.

In a related development, IHEP’s Spallation Neutron Source Science Center of has signed a cooperation agreement with HTA Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Isotope & Radiation Corporation. The two parties will collaborate to establish an integrated industry-academia-research-application system, accelerating the transition of China’s self-developed alpha-emitting radiopharmaceuticals from laboratory research to clinical use.
